Recommendations for Collaboration

10/10/2022

The list below was created from interviewing artists who worked in collaboration with other artists.

1) Hold on to and appreciate what you and your collaborator have in common.
2) Keep clear the vision of what you are working toward.
3) Be willing and open to let go of what you are working toward.
4) Stay open. Everything changes. Accept that fact.
5) Work as hard as you need to for yourself, but try not to have too many expectations of your collaborator or of the final outcome.
6) Don't think you have to agree on everything; you just have to agree on some things.
7) Try not to take your collaborator or their bad moods too personally.
8) Walk away when necessary. Do something else. Go for a long walk. Go alone for a long walk.
9) Accept from the outset that you can't know the outcome.
10) Try not to have too many expectations. (Repeat this, out loud, if necessary, often.)
