Hits of Sunshine - Performance Art with Secret Drum Band
In the drenched Seattle winter of 2014 was a sunny performance called HITS OF SUNSHINE at the Henry Art Gallery. This work inspired by the Joshua Tree desert featured drums from The Secret Drum Band, consisting of Lisa Schonberg, Heather Treadway, and Allan Wilson. Costumes created by Heather Treadway and dancers including myself provided visual and interactive performances before, during and after the show. This work was created at Andrea Zittle's High Desert Test Sites artists residency near Joshua Tree.
The sounds of the desert, very much alive, mixed with the drumming of the weather of the location made for very earthy expression. The costumes by Heather and make up artistry by me, sought to call forth colors in motion, and a endless horizon for our eyes to see. This beautiful collaboration inspired by the special Joshua Tree desert is an example of environmental art and cultural ecology. I was honored to honor the desert, a longed for darling in the damp winter of the pacific northwest.
