Art as a Response to the Oil Spill - Photo Collages
How are people processing ecological destruction? When the Gulf of Mexico was severely devastated by the oil spill I needed to create something to help express my feelings of helplessness and sorrow for what happened. I created collages of people prostrating in humble reverence to what has been done. These collages were ideas of performance art where people soaked their hair in oil and dragged their hair across the feet of those in the audience.
Incidentally, I saw a connection to the bald heads and the people that were collecting hair across the country to help sop up the oil. I'm grateful for the phyto-remediation work done by one of my heroes Paul Stamets during this tragedy. Paul Stamets then developed inoculated boons so that the mushrooms could help transform the oil to be inert.
